Emerson M. Turner
    Elberton, GA

This demonstration website commemorates the 87th Seabees and demonstrates the WebforAuthors.com system. Emerson Turner was a member of the 87th and not the author of The Earthmover.

Emerson Turner grew up in the small community of Rock Branch in Elbert County, Georgia. After graduating from Rock Branch High School, he joined his father Archie in building bridges as a steel setting subcontractor.

With World War II imminent, Emerson worked on the Trans-Isthmus Highway across Panama. Pearl Harbor and World War II and the subsequent submarine menace in the Atlantic and Caribbean prompted an acceleration of the effort for a land access route to parallel the Panama Canal.

The war with Japan in the Pacific brought a need for experienced construction workers to join the Navy. Emerson joined the Naval Construction Battalions - better known by their initials of "C.B." or Seabees - as a Chief Petty Officer.
